Olympic Games 2012 - Torch Relay through Burton Bradstock
The Olympic Torch Relay passed through Burton Bradstock on 12 July on its way to Weymouth and Portland see Map.
The torch convoy started at 16.52 at the 30 mph sign on Burton Road and progresed down the main road as far as Beach Road when the convoy took it on to Abbotsbury. The Torch Bearers ran in the following order.
Sandra Bowers, 38, is an ultra athlete who regularly runs 50K + miles with her beloved huskies and alone. She knows very well from experience how running improves health & well being especially self esteem. She wants to encourage as many people especially children to enjoy sports either alone or with dogs.
Betty Port works part-time as an Anglican priest, taught at All Saints Church of England School in Weymouth for 22 years and was Deputy Head for 10 years. Betty co-ordinated fundraising at the school and was nominated by a former student who said she had inspired her, through all the charity work she does, to set up her own charity, Bridges to Belarus.
Rosie Barfoot works locally as a business performance coach and is the founder of the Phoenix Legacy, a voluntary organisation which encourages people over the age of 50 to have more active lifestyles – in mind, body and spirit. She has also launched the ‘Mind Your Head’ challenge, in conjunction with the Brain Trust Charity, which challenges people to use their brain cells and keep their minds active.

Shirley Parker from Burton Bradstock represented Great Britain in fencing at the Olympic Games in Rome (1960) and Tokyo (1964). Shirley is enthusiastic about this opportunity to celebrate the games and for local people and visitors to get involved and turn out as the torch passes through the village.
The Main Olympic Games start on 27th July 2012 and run until 12th August. The Paralympic Games begin on 29th August and close on 9th September.
Although the main athletic events will be taking place in London other important sports will take place at specialist out of town venues. The Olympic Sailing events will take place in Weymouth and Portland which is less than 20 miles away from Burton Bradstock. The full schedule of sailing events can be found here.
